About Our Agency

The St. Mary’s County Health Department is the local arm of the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Under the direction of the county’s Health Officer, Dr. Meenakshi G. Brewster, MD, MPH, the St. Mary’s County Health Department is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of our St. Mary’s County community. Within the scope of its resources, the health department delivers a variety of services to our community based on the health needs of St. Mary’s County and federal, state, and county laws and regulations. In cooperation with state and county officials and other partners, it is the SMC Health Department’s vision to improve the quality of life for residents in St. Mary’s County. As the county’s leader in public health, the department is committed to assuring the residents in our county have access to personal and environmental health services and information.
The department conducts operations through four internal divisions, each responsible for specific public health functions serving residents, businesses/organizations, and health care providers in St. Mary’s County:

Division of Public Health Preparedness and Response

  • Clinical Services (Health Clinic)
    • Health education and services related to reproductive health
    • Pregnancy tests and support for healthy pregnancies
    • Immunizations (call for available vaccines and eligibility)
    • Screening for breast and cervical cancer for eligible women
    • Screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
    • Help to quit use of tobacco products
  • Infectious Disease Control – monitoring, preventing, and responding to infectious disease outbreaks
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response – working with community partners to ensure health needs are addressed in the community’s preparation for and response to emergencies/disasters

Environmental Health Division

  • Water & Sewer
    • Clear Water/Bay Restoration Grant Program
    • On-site water supply and sewerage disposal systems oversight and permits – determines suitability of property for development/repair
    • Sanitary surveys of family day care and foster care
    • Application of sludge in the county’s agricultural areas – monitoring assistance to the Maryland Department of the Environment
    • Monitor drinking water quality in certain locations serving drinking water
    • Well Program – well sampling, permits, and health assurance
  • Food Safety – inspection and licensing of food service facilities and events
  • Public Beaches – inspections
  • Public Pools and Spas – inspections and permits
  • Rabies Prevention and Animal Bite Response
  • Environmental Health complaints – investigation as appropriate
