St. Mary’s County Health Department has worked to prevent rabies in our community since 1984, when rabies became endemic in Maryland’s wild animal population. Environmental Health Division staff follows up on animal bite incidents and collects specimens for laboratory analysis, when necessary.

Animals: If you see an animal exhibiting any symptoms of Rabies, call St. Mary’s County Animal Control at 301-475-8018.
People: If bitten or scratched by any animal, call the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department at 301-475-8008.

PROTECTING THEM PROTECTS US!
The Health Department and St. Mary’s Animal Welfare League (SMAWL) sponsor rabies vaccination clinics from 6-8 p.m. on the second Monday of most months, March through November, at the county fairgrounds near the 4-H building or Pavilion. Animal owners are requested to bring cats and ferrets to the clinic in a pet carrier. Dogs must be kept on a short leash or in a carrier. The cost is $10 per shot - Cash or Check only. To receive a three-year vaccination, you must present a current rabies certificate (not tags).

An after-hours on call system for Environmental Health Services Division staff provides coverage for rabies emergencies through the County’s Emergency Control Center at 301-475-8016.
