Grant funding from the state of Maryland and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) provides annual clinical breast examination, annual mammogram and pap smears, as needed, for women 40 -64 years of age and for women over 65, if they do not have Medicare Part B.
The local contact for this initiative, St. Mary’s County Health Department’s Women’s Wellness Program, provides outreach, patient and public education, screening, referral, follow-up and case management for breast and cervical cancer prevention and screening. Participants in the program must be Maryland residents with family incomes less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level and not have insurance with screening benefits. Women who are enrolled in Primary Adult Care Program (PAC) or Medical Assistance are not
eligible for the program.
Federal Poverty Guidelines
Effective January 23, 2008, household income must be at or below 250 percent
of the Federal Poverty Level Guidelines.

The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be about 9,710 new cases of invasive cervical cancer in the US in 2006. About 3,700 women will die from this disease.
Prevention education and early detection through health screening is the key to better health!
Outreach and Education
Health department staff provides patients with information about risk factors, the importance of regular screening and signs and symptoms of cervical and breast cancer. In addition, local health fairs often include information about the St. Mary’s Women’s Wellness Program.
Screening Services
The health department subcontracts with private physicians, radiologists, and medical laboratories to perform screening services.
